We have some friends who graciously invited my family up for the weekend (and longer) at their house in Burney, CA.
It's about 50 miles east of Redding, CA. It was pretty nice. I've always been kind of dismayed with 3-day weekends in California, in that it seems like anyplace we went, we'd simply sharing whatever place it was with a million other people. Not this place.
I knew I was in for a good time just driving up to their house and saw this for a sunset:
We really didn't have an agenda at all, which was just about what I really wanted to have happen.
The mornings were cold and icy and we could hear the Canadian Geese all squawking across the road at the front of the property. They'd fly over the house when they took off heading North.

There was also the Burney Creek that bordered the property on two sides. The bridge was kind of cool too, as it had all sorts of swallows nests made of mud on the underside.
This also seems to be an area of California that's big with fisherman. Apparently there are tons of places to go fly fishing for both native, as well as hatchery-born trout.
Burney Falls was about five miles down a dirt road.
I think the only people there on three day weekends were the same people that are there for two day weekends.

It was pretty cold there too. I kind of liked how the frost clung to the dead oak leaves.
